GENDER EQUALITY

GENDER EQUALITY PORJECT

Wherever women are deprived of their  rights, humiliated and abused, development is limited. Gender equality is the view that all sexes should receive equal treatment and should not be discriminated against based on their gender. At Motherly Heart Foundation we acknowledge that gender equality  requires equal enjoyment by women and men of socially valued goods, opportunities,resources and rewards. When you have women or men who are left out of or mistreated by their societies, those societies are less stable, insecure, less democratic. Gender based violence hinders the ability of individuals to participate fully in to their families and communities- economically,socially and politically. Gender equality is vital in ending poverty and boosting shared prosperity.

In Uganda today, there are several gender equality issues;

  • Domestic Violence,where women are likely to be victimised by someone they are intimate with.
  • Dowry violence, this is common where a bride is killed at home of the husband due to dissatisfaction over the dowry provided by her family.
  • acid attack, these are connected to domestic disputes,and refusal of a proposition to marriage
  • forced marriage, this is where one or both are forced into marriage against there will, resulting into family disputes. This results from need of bride price and dowry.
  • sexual harassment, this includes, intimidation, bullying or coercion of a sexual nature and its often perpetrated  by a person in position of authority against a subordinate.
  • human trafficking and forced  prostitution, human trafficking refers to acquisition of persons by improper means such as force, fraud or deception with aim of exploiting them. Many Ugandan women have been recruited by agencies in the Middle East and Asia only to find themselves victims of human trafficking and forced prostitution.

Therefore through joint efforts and engagements with the leaders and elders in some communities for example Kasese, Kyegegwa,and sebei region where motherly heart foundation have visited, we have made tremendous progress in promoting Gender equality in communities through ;

  • Awareness workshops inviting senior women and gender activists
  • following the work of the United Nations Development Programme on social media.
  • Connecting with friends to raise funds to support female entrepreneurs with small businesses in towns

Motherly Heart Foundation policy of gender equality fosters team building activities, monthly meetings, guest speakers on the topic of gender equality.
